In Ornago, a town that hosted the illustrious historian and economist Pietro Verri, and was a meeting place for exponents of the Lombard Enlightenment and the testing of their ideas in the field of agriculture, is the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Lazzaretto, built in the 18th century. Inside you can admire: an altarpiece by Carlo Verri depicting St. Martin, a depiction of the Prodigal Son by Francesco Corneliani, and a 19th-century Amati organ.
Adjacent to the shrine is the Cappella Verri (18th century), where Pietro and his family members are buried. It is a rare example of a funerary chapel built outside a church, albeit included within the perimeter of the building's plan. It was Verri who wanted it that way to signify the independence and freedom of thought of the Enlightenment intellectual, such as he was. He had the funerary monument built, inspired by that of the famous philosopher Kant in Kaliningrad.
The shrine constitutes one of the stops on the Saint Augustine's Way.
