The Villoresi Canal bike path crosses the Lombard countryside, skirting the entire stretch of the Villoresi Canal, the historic waterway built to irrigate fields in the late 19th century by engineer Eugenio Villoresi. The Canal takes water from the Ticino River, at Somma Lombardo, and after an 86-kilometer route returns it to the Adda River near Groppello.
It is an easy and flat bicycle route, permeable by all types of bicycles and also suitable for families with children. It is an ideal place for an out-of-town bike ride, allowing you to get to know the naturalistic and scenic riches of the area, biking through cultivated fields, parks and forests, with several detour possibilities to be taken to discover the architectural beauties of the many municipalities that cross it, or to continue on the other bike paths that the canal crosses.
You just have to pay attention to distances: the route of the Viloresi Canal Bike Path, flanking the course of the canal, is 85 kilometers long. It begins near the town of Somma Lombardo and ends near Cassano d'Adda, so unless you are very well trained, it is recommended that it be done in stages! Along the way the track has short sections where it flows into city streets.
Along the way, the bikeway intersects several bicycle paths such as those within the Groane Park, and the Naviglio Grande Bike Path.
