The church is dedicated to St. Gerard of the Dyers, who died in Monza in 1207 and founded the hospital of the same name. The saint was buried in the cemetery attached to the then-existing small church of Sant'Ambrogio, later dedicated to Gerardo. In the 18th century the church was renovated in Baroque forms with the construction in 1735 of the new apsidal chapel intended to house the saint's remains, but in 1835 a total reconstruction and enlargement of the building was decided. The architect Giacomo Moraglia was commissioned, who designed a large neoclassical church covered by a central dome, preserving inside the chapel where the saint is buried with its furnishings and frescoes.
