The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli was built by 1608 at the behest of priest and man of letters Bartolomeo Zucchi, who died of the plague in 1630. Heir to an ancient and noble family, Zucchi wanted to erect at his father's house a public church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, exactly on the spot where on August 11, 1578 St. Charles Borromeo had healed a noblewoman from Monza suffering from serious ailments. The church, officiated by the Jesuits, was enriched with valuable works of art; between the 19th and 20th centuries, however, the 17th-century building was destroyed to allow for the widening of the street, and in its place was erected the present church with neo-Gothic forms, the work of architect Spirito Maria Chiappetta.
