Constructed in 1842 over the remains of the Roman Arena Bridge (an archway of which is still visible near one end of the present bridge) when the Via Ferdinandea, now Via Vittorio Emanuele II, was opened, the Ponte dei Leoni consists of three arches with granite abutments. Guarding the monumental bridge on all four sides are four marble lions, the work of the sculptor Tantardini.
From the bridge there are two walkways that run along the course of the Lambro River, leading to areas once occupied by grain mills, irrigation ditches and wash houses.
A testimony to this ancient area, there remain the typical and picturesque balconied houses.
