From Park architectures to residential and school settlements: a journey through the twentieth century in Monza

A journey of discovery of the architecture built in Monza Park since 1922, with particular attention to contemporary elements found in the neighborhoods north of the city and in the areas bordering the park. The analysis extends to residential settlements, sports, school and tertiary buildings, offering an articulated look at the urban and architectural evolution of the area.

1. Former RAI control center

Ex television control center, built in Monza Park is characterized by the glazed facade with anodized aluminum window frame resting on a band covered in black ceramic tile, which draws a dish along Viale Mirabello and by square-based rear body designed to give residence to the plant engineer and janitor.

The circuit's structure, made almost entirely of concrete, is designed to attract the international motoring public. The racetrack has 34 pits, refueling points of grandstands made of brick, wood and iron pillars to support the roof. The track layout is revised and designed differently over the years, undergoing innovative and safety-compliant improvement works.

3. Pool of the former Villa Tagliabue

The current home of the Sporting Club of Monza, formerly Villa Tagliabue, a building of Victorian character, houses inside the outdoor swimming pool, designed in 1950, which with its sinuous morphology, surrounded by greenery, is deata as a place for relaxation and recreation. The structure is made of reinforced concrete covered in glass and ceramic mosaic in blue-blue tones, shading along the edge with yellow and black hues to remark the sinuous course of the pool. Enriching the structure is a sculpture pierced inside the pool by Antonia Tomasinie, a dolphin designed by Lucio Fontana, and a trampoline of about 2 meters.

4. Park 80

"Park 80" was created as an intention to create a highly recognizable portion of the city, designed with architectural consistency for different uses. The buildings are made with pure forms and volumes and are clad in white plaster and gray stone, clear of strong contrast with the surrounding reality. Characteristic are the porches of great functionality for public spaces, as well as the square and fountain "Sun, Moon, Tree" s studied with sculptor Gio Pomodoro.

5. Via Albinoni Condominium

The building rises in a purely residential area, is seven stories high, above ground, and is characterized by its context by formal rigor, attention to detail, and ceramic tile cladding in the shade of brown that shimmers in the sunlight. The window openings are diversified according to the intended use of the interior rooms and the distribution solution of each floor, conceiving the various levels as different living solutions.

6. Faculty of Medicine

The university building is located on the border of the municipality of Monza, with that of Vedano al Lambro. The taller body of five floors above ground houses laboratories, meeting rooms, offices and administration, while the smaller one, with more sinuous forms, houses student services. The elevations are characterized by the sequence of narrow windows or small rounds that pierce the surface, screened by aluminum brise-soleil.

7. Cogeneration Plant

The power plant is characterized by cladding in rectangular panels with high sound-absorbing power in green-blue hues, from which rise regular polyhedra clad in blue corrugated sheet metal. These color plays are intended to soften the aesthetic impact of the technological plant in the urban environment.

8. ELMAG Plant

Typology: industrial, exhibition and office building

Designer: Angelo Mangiarotti

Year: 1964

The building, located on the border of the town of Lissone, is designed with an industrial structure. The plant is distinguished by its formative simplicity, consisting of an innovative precast prestressed concrete system. The beam-pillar-roofing node is exposed as the supporting structure, supported by a reinforced concrete T-pillar, which allows dry assembly of the beam and roof tile. The innovative system makes it easy to increase the structure by simply adding the base node (8x16 meters).

9. Church of St. Joseph

Typology: Religious-ritual architecture, church and parish center

Designer: Justus Dahinden, E. De Rossi

Year: 1972-1976

The building, located in a populated residential neighborhood, is designed to convey a sense of community and is characterized by an irregular agerarchical formation. It is clad entirely in bricks that wrap around the different buildings of which it is composed.

10. Church of Christ the King

Chiesa di Cristo Re

Typology: parish church

Designer: Luigi Ricci

Year: 1966

Address: Via Giacomo Tosi 6

The parish complex represents a central plan layout, the fulcrum of the entire structure. In the basement, architect Ricci designed a conference hall, while on the ground floor is the church. Of great significance is the spire-lantern, placed in the center of the roof, the optical reference point of the entire composition, the decorative concrete cladding with vertical streaks along the facade.
