THE GREAT OPERA IN THE VILLA

Opera Review at the Villa Reale Theater

Villa Sormani and the Consorzio Villa Reale e Parco di Monza have teamed up to bring to life the first opera season at the Teatro di Corte della Reggia di Monza. Four appointments with "La Grande Opera in Villa" will be scheduled between April and June 2026: on Thursday, April 10, Mozart's The Magic Flute will open, followed by Puccini's Madama Butterfly on Thursday, April 30, Verdi's La Traviata on May 21, and concluding on June 25, Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia will be staged.

This is a special musical theater show that adapts the most important Italian and international operatic titles in an Opéra-comique version, made up of singing, acting and dancing, with piano accompaniment and stage performance in costume.

In order to involve the audience more and more, an introduction of a historical-musical nature full of references, anecdotes and interdisciplinary connections by Silvia Corbetta, pianist, is an integral part of the show.

April 10, 2026 THE MAGIC FLUTE

The Magic Flute represents in many ways the spiritual testament of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is not his last composition; the Requiem Mass in D minor, left unfinished on his deathbed, represents the last last last effort of a man whose music put us in touch with God.
The work was given in Vienna, with extraordinary success, in the Theater auf der Wieden, on September 30, 1791, and its fortunes became known in German countries as that of a revelation. The story tells how Prince Tamino, aided by the faithful Papageno, fights the forces of evil and frees his beloved Pamina.

April 30, 2026 MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Madama Butterfly is a Japanese tragedy whose story comes from as far back as David Belasco's theater, itself taken from a Philadelphia lawyer's book inspired by the true story of Pierre Loti, who went to Nagasaki and "temporarily" married a geisha. With Puccini, however, everything takes on another color. The composer from Lucca knows how to unite musically two very distant cultures, two cultures, the Western and the Far Eastern, which in the mid-nineteenth century discovered each other for the first time. He inserts several original Japanese musical themes into Madama Butterfly precisely to make the narrative believable and true, and he juxtaposes, grafts and makes them coexist with his music as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Music unites what men instead keep well divided, in the story.

May 21, 2026 LA TRAVIATA

La Traviata, the third opera in Verdi's popular Trilogy, is an opera that has entered into myth. Violetta Valéry is not a classic melodrama heroine; she is lost, fragile, like the singing that accompanies her, mostly fragmentary and irregular, never relaxed. This character is new even for Verdi; we can say that she is also the first decadent heroine of Verdi's theater, because after her no opera by the maestro from Busseto will be centered on a single character ever again.
Violetta is an outcast, a woman who is used by the nobility and the upper middle class, but who knows, by welcoming sacrifice, how to impart a lesson of love and loyalty to the very society that, while enjoying her services, publicly despised her.

La Tosca di Giacomo Puccini (1900) è un dramma passionale ambientato a Roma nel 1800. La cantante Floria Tosca ama il pittore Mario Cavaradossi, che aiuta il fuggiasco politico Angelotti. Il crudele capo della polizia, Barone Scarpia, usa la gelosia di Tosca per catturare Mario. Dopo aver ucciso Scarpia per salvare Mario, Tosca scopre che l'esecuzione è vera: disperata, si suicida.

June 25, 2026 THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

Rossini composed The Barber of Seville when he was 20 years old. He did it in adverse conditions, defying the odds and in record time: it took him only 37 days. Despite the fact that he had a signed contract with the greatest theater in the world, the San Carlo in Naples, he accepted the challenge of setting to music the vicissitudes of Figaro, the handyman barber, which had caught the attention of Mozart and Da Ponte (in Le nozze di Figaro) and had already entered the theater thanks to the work of one of the most esteemed composers of the "old" school: Giovanni Paisiello. But nothing could deter the young Rossini, neither the tight schedule, nor the difficulties during rehearsals, nor the sudden death of the impresario of the Teatro Argentina in Rome where the premiere of the opera was held, which, moreover, went badly.
Rossini knew what he was doing and, in fact, after that ill-fated debut the opera became his greatest success, beloved all over the world and greeted, as he himself said by "applause of a whole new kind," which moved him to tears.
